Well the problem isn’t that. There’s a lot of good things about religion and that religious people do. Many religious people tend to be very giving. They donate things and they help the more unfortunate. The problem is that these people mistakenly believe that you need religion in order to help inspire people do good. When people who are religious attempt to help others, they often do so in order to have people associate goodness with their organization or religion. It’s how religious organizations can easily take advantage and exploit others in a terrible situation in order to get them to convert. They’ll give a sandwich to a starving person, but only if they stick around to be preached, too.
There are many wonderful things religion can do, but there are just as many awful and terrible things. If people can help others from the goodness of their hearts, and not because a god told them to, without expecting anything in return, and without passing on harmful religious messages as they do so… that would be wonderful.
